How iZettle Designed the World's First Ocean Plastic Credit Card Terminal with Oceanworks
What started as an idea for an internal company hackathon rapidly became reality with iZettle and their product team approaching Oceanworks in October of 2018. Just over a year later, we're excited to have the announcement of the world's first ocean plastic credit card terminal.
With a distinct desire to utilize reclaimed fishing nets, iZettle was determined to bring their innovative design and core values to the table. Paired with the fast paced culture of Oceanworks, something special was created with mutual enthusiasm on all sides.

The first step in the journey from idea to reality started with iZettle contacting Oceanworks to understand how we work and what materials may be suitable. We immediately suggested a polypropylene derived from recycled fishing nets as it would meet their initial molding requirements. iZettle quickly reviewed the technical data sheets and Oceanworks ensured delivery of material to their injection molder for testing. Innovation rarely moves in a straight line, so there were numerous obstacles that had to be overcome, as iZettle has a robust security functionality built into every unit, and naturally a very high demand for perfection with final product assembly and finish. Most exciting, is that iZettle wanted to maintain the texture and finish of the material, with no added colorants and a beautiful swirling effect found naturally with the injection molding process.

Timelines certainly vary with our customers, but with the design and development work required we are equally thrilled by the speed and determination that iZettle put into the project. As true in many things, we're better all working together to help combat ocean plastics.
iZettle wanted to prove that it is possible to use fishing net material in their products and also be transparent with the impact metrics of the entire product. Thats where the Oceanworks marketing team came into play, helping iZettle determine key metrics to help iZettle tell both consumers and retail partners the net positive impact that each card reader creates for the ocean. We offer this service to all of our in network customers.
